 For art lovers, the Stavanger museum of fine arts 
Located in Mosvangen, a gorgeous natural area popular recreational area for all living in Stavanger. This museum which is made of glass and bricks gathers a collection of paintings and works from the late 19th c. and early 20th c and is the perfect option for art lovers visiting the Stavanger region.


The permanent collection shows 2500 works by artists Lars Hertervig, Kitty Kielland, Hans Gude, Olaf Lange and others.
This is the place to visit in Norway to find the largest collection of works by Hertervig, artist known for his original paintings with influence from Disseldorf style. Important to note that he used thin tobacco paper in order to give emphasis to the landscape’s lightness.

Each year there museum presents temporary exhibitions from Norwegian and International artists.

This year the turn is for Norway’s leading weaving artist Frida Hansen, with Art nouveau in full bloom


Hansen is the foremost exponent of art nouveau. She is a textile artist who brought medieval Norwegian weaving, art nouveau, symbolism and the arts and crafts movement together.


Pattern drawing was something she excelled at, shown here in her work Clematis and birds of Paradise


Hansen uses lots of symbolism and is pioneer in the transparent technique.

The museum located 3 km from the city, can be reached by bus (numbers 3,6,7,9 10 and 29 stop Tjenssvollskrysset) or if you enjoy nature take a nice 30 minute walk. It has a wide range of activities for its visitors, as well as a shop with souvenirs, reading material and a café.

The museum is open from tuestday to sunday 11 am to 4pm, thursdays from 11 am to 7pm, mondays closed. During summer time it opens from 10 am.
